Oral hygiene tips for braces wearers

Oral hygiene tips for braces wearers

While your orthodontist and braces do most of the work straightening out your smile, it’s up to you to keep your teeth and gums clean and free of cavities. Here are six oral hygiene tips for braces wearers.

Remove. Wearing elastics? Be sure to remove them before brushing and replace them when you’re done with your oral hygiene routine.

Floss. Floss at least once a day with dental floss and a floss threader, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

Brush. Brush with a soft toothbrush after every meal or snack, making sure to brush at a 45-degree angle above and below your brackets, and in front, back, and the flat surfaces of your teeth.

Rinse. Rinse with water after meals and snacks if you cannot get to your toothbrush. Then, after you brush your teeth before bedtime, rinse with an antimicrobial mouth rinse.

Visit. Keep up with your regular dental and orthodontic appointments.

Avoid. Steer clear of foods that can damage your braces or get stuck in your brackets, such as hard or sticky candy, gum, ice, popcorn, and whole apples.

Keeping up with good oral hygiene habits while wearing braces will help your teeth stay cavity-free. Talk to your dental team about the best toothbrush for you and options for building up enamel if you have sensitive teeth. Once your braces are removed, you’ll be left with a straight, bright smile.
